My husband owns an oiicanditroning business and he has always said to set the thermostat higher than you would normally have it- set it around 85 degrees. Leave it on. That way, when it gets to be above that temp in the house, it will go on, but it will not cool your house too much, since that would be a waste of electricity with nobody home to enjoy it! If you are concerned about a fire or something ( you actually should be more concerned with water damage from a/c units) then I would recommend having your unit serviced before you go to make sure there aren't any problems.
